OpenURL
A URL containing citation metadata that queries a links knowlege base for a link(s) leading to the citation source such as a link to the electronic full text of an article.
BaseURL
The URL of the links server that receives OpenURL queries. The LinkSolver BaseURL is the same for all customers: http://linksolver.ovid.com/OpenUrl/LinkSolver
Besides the LinkSolver image, the BaseURL is all your database provider needs to know in order to link to your link resolver.
ContextObject
The metadata link resolvers use to query the knowledge base and return with the appropriate links depending on your settings. In an OpenURL the ContextObject starts right after the BaseURL+? [question mark]
Link Target
The website where you wish to link. The link resolver uses the ContextObject metadata to populate the Link Target in order to resolve the link to the correct article.
Source
The origin of the OpenURL query; often a bibliographic database or an OPAC.
Embargo
Embargo is a period of time in which access to online content is not permitted. This period is commonly measured in months, but can be days, weeks, or years. Delayed Access is one kind of common embargo where the content is available in print but access to the same content online is delayed. Moving Wall is another kind of embargo which allows access within a defined period of time.
Article Level Linking
Links that resolve to individual articles in a journal. Usually this means the link resolver must receive sufficient metadata in the OpenURL, such as ISSN + Volume + Issue + Start Page.
Journal Level Linking
Links that resolve to a journal homepage or volume list. If more specific metadata such as Volume / Issue / Start Page are missing, the link resolver can only offer a link to the journal homepage. This may also happen if the remote resource (webserver) does not accept the full metadata transferred.
